Writing Exercise: Policeman is dog, microscope, loud TV, etc

I was using "linking qualities" today. "Policeman" with; a shield, dog, microscope, loud TV, running child.

The policeman is as tough as a Roman guard deflecting the arrows of evil's law-breaking legions.

The policeman was sniffing for clues, every "a-ha" he evoked was a jubilant tail-wagging.  This canine of the law had the bite of a pit bull when it came to his hungry need to solve yet another messy case.

The policeman had the focus of a microscope, peering into the tiniest hesitations of his so-called innocent suspect.  Inquiring into the very DNA of his thoughts like a cancer researcher on the cusp of finding yet another cure.  The question-cubicle was his laboratory in this science of crime fighting.

I heard his voice behind me.  The policeman was a TV going into commercial late at night and I in a deep slumberous dream.  His tone squeezed adrenaline into my empty stomach.  I turned from my easy-chair, easy-going thoughts of a carefree day ahead to let the dog out of his desires.

The police was in hot pursuit, breaking the glass, tripping the alarm in his heart and setting him on a course of pursue-e from pursuer.  The shrill screams of the siren set him on a sadly excited course of madness.

Ed. Note:  I'm enjoying this. :)

Writing Exercise - Traffic

From a writing exercise today:

"Traffic is ...My Enemy

"Traffic is my enemy as I see the red line on Google Maps leering back at me in pained defiance.  My blood boils as it presents itself to me in spite.  I thrust and parry, in and out of lanes.  Battle cries of, "What an idiot!"
Oh, how I despise traffic's daily rebellion to my perfect plans!"

My Christmas Single - Available Now!

This past year I recorded a Christmas song for an music industry pitch that was eventually passed on.  So I though, "Hey there, songboy!  Why don't you put this track out there as a single to like, sell and stuff?!

So that what's I (and the other personage in my head that I was talking to) did!

I present:

Writing Exercises, Heated-Kernel Mouth-Stuffing

Let's sample some further fruits of my "timed, sense-bound object writing" exercises, shall we?

Rain Cloud

Where did you go rain cloud?
You were looming in all directions this gloomy morning
I see your friends through the messy myrtle branches
I hear the sneaky jet engines rumble overhead
You spoke in black over tones

Movie Theatre

"I already foresee the end of my heated-kernel mouth-stuffing binge"

From cigar to:

"Breezes of quiet patron dreamings [I think I just made up a word] seeping from the Holiday Inn window.

Sailor

"Wind slaps at my face.  The elements love me with the force of a hurricane devotion"

"Black coffee like the nighttime sea-sky."

Waitress Clearing A Table

"Her heart floods with the thankfulness of a coffee-starved college student"

"No one hears her thoughts but drinks in her smile"

Balloon Man

"Multi-colored happiness hovering on a canvas of sky-blue infinity"

First Snowfall

"[The] quiet of whispering, white manna-flakes"

That's it for now.  Can you tell I am amusing myself?  Will this make be a better songwriter?

Moving-Forward Monday

Acoustic guitars become 1's and 0's in the mysterious digital recording world!
Looking back on the last week or two...I've started two new songs this past week and I think another the week before. (I get some idea or inspiration from an artist who's song is featured on a TV show and off I go).  I've added in writing exercises as well.

On the recording end of things, started guitars and drums on one song, background vocals on another, and I'm ready to add "backgrounds" on still another.

Oh! Went to a songwriter get-together this past week and received some great feedback on a song I started TWO YEARS AGO! I knew it could still be better and I was right. The question is, do I want to continue with this one or just move on and write something new and fresh, and hopefully better with the new things I'm learning.

There's plenty to keep me busy while the band's on break.

Writing Exercises, Extremity Intrusions

Okay, so I have set aside a notebook not for writing songs, but strictly for craft-improving writing exercises that I might be working on at any given point in time.  Currently working with Pat Pattison's "Songwriting Without Boundaries"

Timed, sense-bound object writing, first thing in the morning. Some interesting lines that amused me recently have come out of this so far:

"Green slimy leaf floating above the murky, unknown world of mystery."

"Rivulets of heaven."

Oh, here are some fun ones.  The writing subject, "dentist"  LOL

"Driving to my own funeral, nervous on the freeway of happy people."

"Feel my body on the chair - raises me to the alien faces looking down on me with white paper          death mask."

"My mouth fights the extremity intrusion into my personal mouth-space"

Moving on!

"Almost taste the toothpaste in my immediate hygienic future."

[Feather] "Rub one gently against my tender finger - ever-so-quietly it rustled in protest."

If I continue on, YOU may protest, so I'll stop here.  Until next time!

I Needed This! Wait - I Needed This?

After a weekend of almost constant travel, sleep on the moving bus, and less-than-stellar busy-diet, I spent a nice stretchy morning in torturous, feel-good poses from P90X Yoga X.

Something like this one >>>>>> (which only lasts 3-5 seconds before my wrists can't take it anymore).

WARNING: Don't try this at home.......just because I did!

I figure whoever reads this will be amused by this photo so I post!  Laugh with me, why don't ya!

Catholic Church Becomes Performing Arts Center

Under the category "Interesting Performance Venues", here's the Campanile Center for the Arts, Minocqua, Wisconsin.
Once a former Catholic Church, it was converted into...a place of employment for the boys and I.

Beer, wine, soda...sins of omission....comission?

Where the priestly preparations were made. Had to take a shot before show time.

Bus parked in the back.

Stained glass only seen from the outside. Covered up inside.

Hats Off To ...Me!

Sharing with you a gift I received from an enthusiastic audience member during the Thunder Valley Rally we performed at in Cottonwood Arizona.  During "Desperado", a standing, front-row, gray-bearded reveler with sleeveless denim vest and tattoos motioned for me to take his hat and put it on during "Desperado"

I proceeded to wear it for the remainder of the show.  And later I was informed that to refuse such a gesture was a form of disrespect in the biker world.  oh  (Thank you! Thank you very much!)
Actually, it was pretty cool!

Taxi Music Forward! - How Kitschy!

Got a Taxi Music Forward!  Yay, for kitschy retro crime jazz!

Here's what I had to go on:

MUSIC SUPERVISOR for a REALITY TV SERIES needs kitschy CRIME JAZZ and LOUNGE INSTRUMENTALS a la John Barry, Lalo Schiffrin, Peter Thomas, Keith Mansfield, David Holmes... DOWN to MID-TEMPO tracks will work best. They're looking for instrumentals with a distinctly RETRO vibe. James Bond-style brass would be nice but is not necessary. You can go DARK and a bit SINISTER but it needs to have a bit of a SMIRK. They're not looking for an epic Morricone-style Spaghetti Western score. Your tracks must be at least 1:30 long.

This was fun to do. Trying to get the feel from the Dirty Harry film soundtracks and the work of composer, Lalo Schiffrin.  Had a limited time frame as usual to put something together. I happen to love this old stuff.

CD (Re)Release! - Available Now!

Okay, time to make good on a promise (or threat!) from an earlier post about putting out into the cyber world my music for sale.  The masterplan was three different musical collections.  And so far...

Here's #1!  "a little unplugged"
Steve Probst: a little unplugged

I shall quote the album notes (I'm actually quoting myself since I wrote the darn things!)

"Faith-encouraging Contemporary Christian Rock songs with thought-provoking lyrics from Steve's earlier recording days. All instruments and vocals performed and recorded by Steve.

"'a little unplugged' looks back on the recorded archives of Steve's musical history, when all he had studio-wise to work with were eight tracks of recordable "sound-canvas". Playing all the instruments, singing all the lead and background vocals, "programming" the drums - he's done it all on this inspired early work and first release. There are many more in songs in the Contemporary Christian genre that he has yet to record!"

The CD (download and/or actual CD in jewel case) can be found by clicking on the album cover above.

"a little unplugged" CD download can also be found at:

GoogleMusic   iTunes   Amazon   Bandcamp

*** PS. I have chosen a title for Album #2.  It shall be named "Window Seat" after the song of the same name from that particular period of my songwriting and recording endeavors.  Look for it shortly at these same online locations.

Christmas in August - New Recording

Worked up a "contemporary" Christmas song for a recent song pitch.  Spent 2 days at home laying tracks (vocals, guitars, keys, etc) and added the rest plus mixing (putting it all together) on the road.

In prep, had a listen to the current charts and found a song/vibe I liked. But the only elements that ended up identical to those in my track are the xylophone and the tempo. Then it just grew from there and took on a produced-by-steve life all it's own. It's nothing like the song I originally heard. lol  So, add another track to the song catalog if it doesn't hit the mark.

Would love to hear what "style" impressions you get when you hear it?  Hope you enjoy listening.

"I don't run, but when I do...."

Listened to Stevie Wonder, "Songs in the Key if Life".  Inspired by his free-spirited vocals. Studied his lyrical craft.  And gave my heart some love in the process. 2 miles of actual running. 1/2 mile warm-up, 1/2 mile cool-down. Lol

First Year at Disney World 2006 - Photo Slideshow

This may be slightly boring to everyone but me and my immediate family. ;)
Collected all the photos of my 2006 working (www.HotelCal.com) vacation at Disney World and put them in a (15 minute!) musical slide show. There are some blurry photos, but I don't care, I used every one - my kids took'em okay! Great memories. Less hair (Less gray!). I get a little teary-eyed every time I watch this.

Show Report: Sandestin, Florida

Every show has a characteristic all it's own.  Let me introduce you to Baytown Wharf of the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.

#1 Note: If there is dancing to be done at one of our shows, it's usually guaranteed to be commenced by a female unable to contain the "Wooo" as in the chorus of "All She Wants To Do Is Dance"  Not so, at this sunshine-induced (with a splash of wine or beer), euphoric rock show!  Bless his suntan, Florida soul - yes, a gentleman, hands raised in the air, started the whole dancing ball rolling. (Crowd shot and caption below by Rich Turner)

#2 No words needed really. See photo below.  I don't looked pleased, do I?  Yeah, it was a little unnerving seeing this gyrating girlie in green complete in her Brittany or...Lindsay.... shades dancing by my side. Okay, I played along. But she really wasn't interested in dancing with anyone but herself, I think. lol
Photo and charming caption by Rich Turner
#3 Let's cap this show report off with some potty humor.  Of a different kind, sure to get a laugh from you the reader.  It wasn't so funny for me though at the time I discovered it.

It was an outdoor show, sun was still out.  I decided for a jacket-less performance, so I laid my black jacket over on my side of the stage on some road cases.  When I returned to retrieve it, I discovered not one, but three little blessings from God's little creatures-that-sit-in-trees-over-stuff-you-put-under-them in the form of bird excrement!  Lovely.  I will be in search shortly of a dry cleaner somewhere in North Carolina.  Yes, Floridians, this happened in YOUR state!  Shame!

Had to get #3 off my chest, but I hope you enjoyed reading #'s 1 and 2 as well.

Unitl next time, I remain...

jacket-less  :-/

Travel Highlight: American Pickers, Nobel Prize - Something In Common?

Seen the cable show "American Pickers"? I've watched it a couple times, but I'm not much of a fan of reality TV shows.  As is the case when traveling "had some time to kill" between checkout and load-in (Newberry Opera House) this past February, so I ambled around the town of Newberry, SC to see what I could..see.

As suggested by the Visitor Center desk-lady in a much expected southern drawl, I paid a visit to C.T. Summer Hardware Store, which was indeed featured on an episode ("Possom Trot") of "American Pickers" on the History Channel.

With Bill Shull, grandson of Clarence Summer, store founder

Meet Bill Shull, proprietor and character-extraordinaire. During our nice and hugeley humorous chat, not only did I hear about the visit by the "Pickers" Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz, I learned that his dad, Clifford Shull, was a historical recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics, 1994!

He gets a lot of visitors in his store due to his Reality TV celebrity-hood, so he was ready to share his articles and photos about his dad.

Established in 1928, C.T Summer is no Home Depot, but it's dripping (or, spilling over) with character.  This is what you see when you first walk in.  Where's Bill!?

Newberry Opera House, Newberry, SC (Why I was in town in the first place)
That's all, folks!

My Audition for the "The Voice"

Let me start with the end of the story.

No, I didn't a call back.  Nevertheless I was amazed I even had a voice at all to do the Sunday audition!  We (Hotel California) did two nights of shows Friday and Saturday at the very smoky Ak-Chin Casino in Maricopa, AZ.  On top of the bad inside air quality, the desert climate is very dry.  I usually come away from this weekend with a very ragged voice.  But I went crazy with the water drinking and Throat-Coat tea and was able to do some sort of vocalizing for one of the "The Voice" show producers.  (Kudos to those keeping me in your prayers!)

There were times I wanted to say, "No way, impossible - not going to have a voice after this!(gig)"  This was indeed a journey of faith and courage for me. The slight bit of rejection, getting a "no", still stung a little, but "live (or, sing) and learn"!

Slept on the bus on the way back from Arizona.  In the
morning, while waiting to be picked up, here I am warming (buzzing)
up what voice I had left.  Silly photo for your enjoyment.
The Rest of the Story

Okay, the "process"!  My audition time was 2 PM.  Got in a line that was, I don't know - half a mile long(?) - snaking around the building. It was huge.  Got into the LA Convention Center (see photo below) after 2 hours of waiting outside in this line.

Up the stairs, ID check, bag check, scanned by hand for any weapons (or bombs?)...then I was sent to a large holding room with scores of other hopefuls.  I was impressed that every member of the casting staff was positive, energetic, and did there respective cattle-call jobs with a sense of encouraging humor.

Up the stairs to the "no photos" zone.
Next, sent to another room!  This is where everyone is broken up into groups of ten and informed that these are people you were going to an audition with.  I was called along with 9 others, and we all stood in front of one of two "The Voice" banners in the front of the room and waited once again.  This is where I was quietly starting to get the pitch pipe, my first note of "Heart of the Matter", ingrained in my head.

Then...escorted for more waiting in the hall outside where the audition would take place.  I saw a few singers with the coveted "red paper" call back award walk by being personally escorted by a head-set wearing crew member.  More waiting meant time for a bathroom break.  I belted out the first few notes of my song in the reverberating tile "warm-up room".

Then in we ten audition-ees went to our doom into the room!  It was a large room, good for singing.  We discovered one table in front of the room with a producer from the show and an assistant.  She was positive, had a great attitude, put me at ease for sure.  The producer explained the rigorousness of the whole process from first audition to getting on the show.  All ten of us sat in chairs and listened to each other sing a verse and a chorus from our chosen numbers.  The producer kept her head down so as to focus on our voices.  THAT made it easier!  We all applauded for each other after our respective turns.  After all of us had our turns we were informed that she wasn't advancing any of us through to the call backs.

NOW, read above!

In cathartic summation:

Yes, I was nervous; but relaxed at the same time.  Yeah, my voice maybe could have been better had I not had the high-energy, second-hand smoke-filled "workout" of the previous two nights in Arizona.  (Specifically, I remember, the notes "Even if, Even if" at the end of the chorus of "Heart of the Matter" being quite a challenge as my audition came to a close).  I really wanted to experience the live audition and, I'm thankful I DID! :)

Tracks Signed!

Everybody - Fist pump!
Well, it's official!  I've signed a contract with a publishing library on four of my instrumental tracks.  If (When!?)  placed these will most likely show up on some sort of Reality TV show or "Access Holywood".

This my first deal specifically dealing with television music as oppposed to prior placements in YouTube commercials, web site music, non-profit video brochures, etc such as I've listed on the "News" page.

This is not really my forte, by I was willing to give writing this stuff a try.  You can hear three of the short tunes below (dancing shoes optional):

"Time Is (Was) On My Side" - New Track

...Take deadlines, for instance.  Nothing like a time limit to get something finished and move on to the next project!
Took a detour from the tunes I had planned to work on yesterday and spent the day working up a short cover of this song for an ad agency pitch. Started by 10am out by 4pm! Another excuse to use my ukulele.
It's a little strange not letting a mix sit overnight for a final next-day listen, but so be it!

Song Craft - You Are My Hero!

Here's a peak at some writing activity from yesterday.

I've read (and have been reading-but that's another post) that if you want to be a serious writer - a pro - as opposed to an amateur, you don't sit around and wait till inspiration magically appears.  You show up "at your desk" (even if it IS somewhere outside in the Florida panhandle in late February-I know, hate me) and you do your work!

This is one way that works for me.  Take a title idea, break down the words of it, and write word associations. A large legal pad works best.  Even if at the end of the day I've written nothing usable in lyric form (Definition: Cr*p), at least I showed up (and felt good after the fact!).

AND there was no laptop in site. It was back to basics and NO smartphone.

Okay, back to the palm trees, sunshine, a coolish-warm Gulf breeze. (sorry!)

Free Valentine's Song Download!

Donut by Dunkin' Donuts
Do you "heart" getting stuff for free?

In honor of Valentine's Day I've instructed my cherub-like (but actually existing only in my mind) assistants to make available for a limited time as a Free Download my song, "Yes, Love" (Donut not included)

MUSE BEHIND THE SONG:

When I sat down at the piano to write "Yes, Love", I was purposely and directly inspired by the songwriting of Burt Bacharach and Hal David.  I love those classic songs like, "A House Is Not a Home", "This Guy's In Love", and "Say A Little Prayer".  I hope to continue writing more like this, contemporary music molds be...."darned"!
FYI: I'm playing all instruments and singing all the vocals you hear in the song.

On the upper right of this page look inside the box that says FREE DOWNLOADS.  Kindly click inside this box for the downloading process to begin.

Yes, you'll have to (not necessarily want to) trade your email address for the goods, but as always, you can grab the tune then unsubscribe!  Sort of like an email-address-back guarantee. What. A. Deal. !

(If you are already captive on my email list, good news - you are already qualified to receive your gushy musical gift.)  CLICK HERE

In conclusion, just say "yes" to "Yes, Love" :)

Hope you enjoy the tune!

Manifesto-State of the Union-Resolution-Extravaganza

It's a resplendently sunny day cruising on the highways of Florida as I check in with the blog.  Here's some things I'm thinking right now:

xI propose to put out 3 different CD collections of songs (with lyrics, singing and stuff),  throughout the channels of commercial cyber space. (Yo, I'm gonna put more effort into hawking my stuff!)

CD #1. I still have a box full of these: Title "a little unplugged". A six-song collection of Christian tunes written, performed, and recorded by me.  They chronicle some of my first recordings on my "older/first" studio equipment.  These are actual CD's in a jewel box.

Allow me to point some things out. :) - (Photo: Shari Hogue)
CD #2 - Maybe titling this one "The Early Years" ( I know, so plain, so boring) or something like that.  (Any suggestions?  Comment below!)  Newer recording gear but still from a few years back, these tracks are all featured on my Music Page.  At last! they will be available together in "album" form (but probably only as digital downloads right now - iTunes, CD Baby, etc)  Once again, written, performed, and recorded by me.

CD #3 - The new stuff on the current studio setup! Redundantly speaking: Written, performed, and recorded by me.  Like #2, it will be made available initially as a download.  I have lots of tunes to record, hopefully ASAP.  We'll see with the traveling schedule and all how it progresses.

I've gotten encouraging reactions from some...."test pressings".  You won't find these songs, recorded in my home studio, on the top of the charts as is, but who cares!  I am my own record company!  The music's recorded, why not share?  To recap: CD's 1 & 2 will be making their appearance on the web before CD 3 (due to the magical creative process still in progress!)

Thanks for reading, thanks for your support, stay tuned!

I shall hit "return" and 2012 continues!
